Government survey figures
For engineering managers across Canada, the government figures are: Job Bank median $139K, StatCan average offered wage $127K (Table 14-10-0444-01) for computer and information systems managers (NOC 20012). All levels, survey data, not job postings. They cover every level, so they sit below a senior posted range.
How company stage affects EM pay
Engineering manager pay changes a lot with company stage. Early-stage startups pay less base salary and offer more equity. Late-stage and public companies pay more cash and come with more organizational complexity. There's no public pay data by stage yet, so the notes below have no numbers.
Seed / Series A
Founding EM roles. People often take a pay cut from Big Tech in exchange for more equity. Expect a lot of hands-on coding.
Series B–C (growth)
Companies scaling their teams need managers who can hire, onboard and grow engineers. Less hands-on work, more people management.
Series D+ / late stage
Enterprise-style pay bands and levels. More organizational complexity, cross-functional work and stakeholder management.
Public company / Big Tech
RSUs and bonuses on top of base. Large scope, often managing managers. More politics and more process.
What I'd do
If you're hiring and you find an EM with 4+ years of management experience, real technical credibility and a record of building healthy teams, move fast. Don't drag out the process with extra rounds. Experienced EMs have other options. Don't lowball base salary and hope equity closes the gap. The test is whether this person can hire, onboard and grow good engineers. If they can, pay them.
If you're the EM, management experience is your biggest lever. Every year you've spent managing, and every engineer you've hired, grown and kept, adds value. Don't accept a generic band without question. Ask for the range, ask where you sit in it, and negotiate on the scope of the role: team size, responsibilities and impact. If a company can't meet your base expectations, ask for a signing bonus or a shorter equity cliff. Get total comp in writing, including salary, bonus, equity and benefits.
